Lincoln Public Library at 12 Bridges Learning Center
The Lincoln Public Library was a joint-use venture between Sierra College, the City of Lincoln, and the Western Placer Unified School District. It was designed to serve the needs of the general public, the local high school, and the community college.
The north facade, which is prominently displayed on the main thoroughfare into the 12 Bridges community, was envisioned as three lanterns of light and knowledge. Adjacent stone masses protect these lanterns from western exposure while allowing filtered daylight deep into the interior. Conversely, the southern facade addresses the shared community plaza. Throughout the building, daylighting is highly controlled by the building's massing, which minimizes the need for electric lighting.
The central location of the circulation desk guards the entrance, protects the children’s area, and allows for secure monitoring of the entire library. This efficient design enables a facility of this size to operate with only seven staff members.
