Alameda College Classroom Building Design Study 2013
As the project designer for the marketing study used in the selection process, I was responsible for translating the facilities master plan and RFQ program directives into a comprehensive conceptual design. This design allowed the team to address the project's goals while demonstrating our expertise in campus planning and our understanding of the specific issues involved.
The proposed conceptual design replaces existing classroom and lab facilities to create a new campus center. Our approach aligns the buildings with the established campus axis, orienting the main entry to the north. The design features a central atrium and flexible space that forms a secure quad between the new and existing structures.
By leveraging southern exposure, the layout draws natural daylight into labs and classrooms through adjacent circulation spaces. This atrium serves as both the primary campus entrance and a breakout space for the laboratories. Additionally, the plan includes a photovoltaic solar shade system along the southern facade to enhance energy efficiency.
